The World Food Day 2010 is to be observed on Oct. 16 with the theme of "united against hunger."

In 1979, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) decided at its 20th General Conference to observe World Food Day each year on Oct. 16 from 1981, the day on which the Organization was founded in 1945.

The objectives of World Food Day are to: encourage attention to agricultural food production, encourage economic and technical cooperation among developing countries, heighten public awareness of the problem of hunger in the world and promote the transfer of technologies to the developing world, and so on.

Each year, governments, civil society organizations and international organizations including FAO carry out different kinds of activities to celebrate World Food Day.

The production, distribution and marketing of world food are global social economic problems. Since its establishment, FAO has done a lot of useful work in promoting the development of national agriculture, such as land cultivation, coordination of food development programs and training of technicians.

Nevertheless, the situation of world food is very severe, and human beings are still plagued by hunger and malnutrition.

According to a joint communique released by FAO and United Nations World Food Program (WFP), it is estimated that by the end of 2010, the number of people suffering chronic hunger worldwide is 925 million, 98 million down from 1.023 billion last year, but is still "unacceptable."

FAO said it should actively cooperate with International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and WFP to play a key strategic role.

Uniting against hunger becomes real when state and civil society organizations and the private sector work in partnership at all levels to defeat hunger, extreme poverty and malnutrition.
