China is the home of tea; for this reason Chinese people are very familiar with tea. Historically, no matter whom they were; emperors, writers, Confucianists, Taoists, Buddhists, and porters, all of China’s people had a close relationship with tea.
As the saying goes “there are seven things to buy after opening the door in the morning: they are wood, rice, oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, and tea”. It was not only the people of mainland China that enjoyed tea. Minority groups in border areas also like drinking tea. The northern nomads favour milk tea, Tibetan people favour butter tea, and the people of southern minorities favour salt tea. It is clear that tea is an indispensable part of their lifestyle.
Tea can be used as a drink, as a medicine, and for culinary purposes. The ceremony of tea drinking has existed everywhere; from the upper palace tea rites, to the secondary literary tea meetings or temple tea parties, to lower folk weddings and festivals. The laws regarding tea, which have been improved upon, generation by generation since the Tang Dynasty, became a major strategy employed by the central government for the control of natives. This strategy was known as the “tea-horse trade”.
Tea travelled across the sea from China, with its fragrance diffusing across the whole world. It has now been found that the “Tea Road” played as an important a role in the communication between Chinese and foreign cultures as the “Silk Road” did.
Drinking tea was not so simple in the past. The ancients had specialized tea arts. In Chinese tea culture there was a wonderful combination of the essences of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism with spiritual philosophy, morality and conduct.。
